Interview With Terry, The Reading Tub, Inc

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

How and when did The Reading Tub get started? What’s its mission?

I have always loved to read and, when our daughter joined us in November 2001, I found sharing books with her to be great fun! One day I was talking with my sister-in-law about children's books (positives & negatives) and she suggested I start a website for parents and teachers.

So I did. I found a do-it-yourself website company in June 2003 and started playing around with ideas. The whole thing started out as a hobby site, with some research, and lots of input and creative ideas from two close friends. Within a year, it had started to grow, and authors started to find us. So I married my love of books with my passion for literacy and launched The Reading Tub, Inc. as a non-profit.

Our mission is to give adults (parents, teachers, librarians, tutors, grandparents, et al.) the tools they need for helping kids with reading. The website has two parts. There is what I call the literacy services side: facts about literacy, information about reading with kids, stats, etc. Then there is the reading side: our unique profiles that help parents find books that match their child's interest whether they are an infant being read to, a pre-teen who is reading independently, or a child (of any age) who is struggling with developing their reading skills.

When I started the Reading Tub, I focused on the "learning" aspect of literacy. That's where "Turning a page … Opening the World"® comes from. Get a child to love (or even just like) reading and you will expand his natural curiosity and imagination … and along the way engender a love of learning.

But our goal really is bigger than just learning. It's simply to bring reading home to families. This is my mantra because it is a statement captures the various facets of children's literacy and reading on several levels. We want to …

  • Encourage parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles to read with the children in their lives … even kids who can read independently can benefit from time shared reading aloud with Mom or Dad.

  • Help the adults find great books that match their kids' interests and reading levels (and skip the over-hyped stuff!).

  • Provide information that explains why reading with a child at home is so important.

  • Post articles and provide links to resources that help parents/grandparents/teachers teach their children to read.

Who are your reviewers and how may an author or publisher contact you about a review request?

Our reviewers are parents who read with their children and kids who are reading themselves. Some of the parents are teachers or former teachers, some are reading mentors, some just like to read books with their kids. It is very important to us that when someone is trying to find a book for a child, that they know what other children think of the book. Professional reviews are great, but getting feedback from the person who is the intended audience is particularly important to us. We try to wear several hats … like the grandparent who wants to find a book for a child, but wants to know what other kids thought about it first.

In March 2004 we partnered with Be the Star You Are!® another non-profit that empowers children and families through positive media. Their message is that to be a leader you must be a reader. BTSYA runs an after-school center for youth at risk, and they created a Teen STAR Book Review Team. We send them books for the 9 to 12 target audience. The kids read the books and write the reviews. I post them on the website with their logo.

Authors and publishers can contact me through the Website. We have a contact form just for that purpose. I would like to add a footnote. We are more than happy to introduce the world to books published for kids, and we would love the opportunity to read yours. But our role is not to help you sell them. Over the years we have had authors who get angry at us for only recommending that someone borrow their book at the library and not buy it. I can truly appreciate the pride authors take in their work – we do, too – but asking for a review doesn't guarantee that the reader will rave about it.

We are a public charity dedicated to children's literacy and family reading. Our goal is to help get our kids excited about reading. We think telling people to ask for the book in their local library is an endorsement, too. Not everyone can afford to buy books for a personal library.

When we review a book, we are looking at its substantive qualities: did our child like this book? is this a story we enjoyed reading with our child? Does it have educational value (explicit or implicit) that can bring reading to life and make it relevant? Would we recommend that others read this book? We just want to make sure that kids have the skills to READ your book.

Do you have any data on how many American children read compared to other countries?

The National Center for Education Statistics has a chart that dates to 2003. In that chart, "Reading Literacy" for US students is 11th among OECD countries (countries participating in the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development), and 15th when about a dozen non-OECD countries are added. [cite: http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d06/tables/dt06_397.asp]

Statistics can be very valuable, but they can also be very pliable, so I try to use them judiciously. Generally, I will overlay them with behaviors and practices that are relevant to literacy in its broader terms. For example, one way to encourage kids to read is to have adults MODEL reading. If a child sees you reading then s/he will accept reading as something important. Well, I read an article not to long ago that said in a recent AP Poll, 1 of every 4 people polled (1,000 surveyed) did not read one book last year. That's 25% of the adult population.

Layer on top of that that more than 20% of adults read at or below a fifth-grade level, and in 1992, more than 44 million adults could not read well enough to read a simple story with a child. [Cite: as presented on http://www.getcaughtreading.org] Blended together, it is a pretty clear picture of the behavior pattern we're creating for our children.

Think about the long-term impact on our kids and their future success. Analysis of a study published by the National Center for Education Statistics in 2006 shows that nationwide, 38 percent of public school fourth-graders and 29 percent of eighth graders still read below basic levels. For fourth graders, state scores of children reading below the basic level range from 32 percent in Delaware to 67 percent in the Discrict of Columbia. That means one in three children are struggling in reading. Until recently, data suggested that the greatest deficiency was reading abilities among boys; data released this summer is showing that girls, too, are now struggling with literacy.

Then we send our kids to college! Kenneth Gray, in his book The Baccalaureate Game: Is It Right for All Teens? (1996), noted that 80 percent of entering freshman cannot read well enough to do college work. That analysis is now more than 10 years old, but I would venture that things haven’t changed much, because for the Fall 2000 semester 76 percent of colleges and universities were offering at least one remedial reading, writing or math course. And it doesn't look like things will change soon.

What seem to be the most popular genre/themes with young children, middle readers, and young adults?

We ask visitors to register with the Reading Tub® so we can determine their reading interests. Having that data helps us prioritize the placement of books we already have for review; and it also helps us see if we are "thin" in a category that match our visitors' interests. If we need to, we can send out a query to authors and publishers to refill the shelves with books that fit their interest categories.

Most of our visitors who registered are reading with kids ages 3 to 8. In that audience, "picture books" is the most common answer, but that covers a broad array of subjects. Animal stories and adventure are neck-and-neck for second place. In houses where families are reading with kids in the 9 to 12 audience, adventure beats out fantasy (though not by much). I need to add, though, that there are lots of registered readers who have no preference for a genre.

Do you think there’s a saturation of the fantasy genre at the moment, or simply enough to meet the demand?

The short answer is yes. One of my parent reviewers asked that I please give him a break from the fantasies. He wants to be able to have enough diversity in what he's reading to give each book a fair review. And when you have too many fantasy stories together they begin to read like they're using the same formula.

That said, for the reader who loves fantasies, there are some great ones out there. We created a page on our site to list some of the really good books we've found. Here's the link: [http://www.thereadingtub.com/search_displayNew.asp?id=1]

I am pleased to report that we have gotten some (what I think are cool) historical fiction novels lately. I can't wait to see those reviews come back.

The Harry Potter series has been wonderful for spurning creativity and getting (and keeping) kids reading, and there seems to be a rush to become the next JK Rowling. As a former editor, I think that there may be times when authors or publishers rush to get something out there so they don't miss that "hot" genre. So sometimes, I think they push too hard or forget to take a step back and get a fresh look at what they've got. I've seen some books that are being touted as a series in Book One. It seems to me that if you're holding out information for the next book, you could be shortchanging your readers on the first one.

What seem to be the best books for reluctant readers?

It is really important that reluctant readers feel they are moving through a book quickly. They tend to like books with lots of 'white space' around the edges and they need pictures to take up some of the page. Shorter sentences and action-driven plots also help.

During the school year, I volunteer with a program that offers tutoring to first graders who are struggling with reading. It is an incredibly enlightening experience, and last year I worked with a boy who would get discouraged when we read books that had more than two or three sentences on a page. So then we would partner read. He got to practice his reading, and I helped by moving the story along. In some ways it is more important to keep the child reading (he can see the words you read) than it is to MAKE him read everything on a page.

For third and fourth graders, we need books with pictures that offer more sophisticated plots. They don't want to read Henry and Mudge or the Froggy books anymore. That just reminds them of how hard it was to read when they were in first and second grade. I have been very impressed with some of the books we've seen with more sophisticated stories and adventures. They are an excellent bridge and can encourage struggling or remedial readers.

How much reading is good reading?

I'm not sure about the best way to answer that. The general recommendation is 20 minutes per day, though I have seen a recommendation for 10 minutes/day, too. Reading with a child is a dynamic, individual process. The goal is to create a positive association with reading. The more it is forced, the more the child will struggle against it.

Reading isn't always about practicing letter sounds or learning words. Some of the best reading can be the shared experience of flipping through the pages of a book to look at the pictures, and maybe talk about them. You can encourage your child to read just by sitting together and sharing a book. Wordless books are great for that.

As kids get older, the actual reading part will be more important. Reading is the one skill that has to be practiced at home, every day. You want to do your best to make this a positive experience. As much as you can, find books that match their interests and reading level. Librarians and teachers are incredible resources that can help you with that. The more you can offer books on subjects they like, the easier it will be to get in that practice time.

My daughter is just starting to read, so we've transitioned from some of the great books we love to share to books with vocabulary and sentence structure that suits her ability. She will rave about a book, and my husband will complain that it's "boring." But that's part of the process … simple and repetitious. So we sprinkle in some of the family favorites with the learning-to-read titles to keep it fun for everyone.

How do you see the future of children’s books now that electronic and print-on-demand publishing are becoming increasingly popular?

I have mixed emotions. On the one hand, I think they offer parents an educational alternative to television and computer games. On the other hand, though, it is yet another format that sits a child in front of a screen. Like TV, sitting at the computer could become a babysitter that absorbs lots of time and doesn't encourage human contact. The average Kindergartener has spent more than 5,000 hours in front of a TV! That's a lot of "screen time."

We have received and reviewed a number of electronic books. Some are CDs that you listen to in the car or on your home stereo. Others are DVDs. Some are books with virtual pages that you click with a mouse and require someone to read the screen. We have received some DVD stories that include audio (i.e., there is a reader and moving highlights to point out words as it reads). We have also gotten multi-media products that offer the story, as well as additional educational material.

The multi-media products are my favorite, because I think they engage a child more than just a book. They also don't require my 100% participation for reading the book and give the child a sense of independence in their reading.

Are ebooks and POD books popular with your readers?

Actually, I have found eBooks hard to place with families. Most of our reviewers like/ want the experience of sharing the book with their child. Unless you have a laptop, when you read a book on the computer, you need a desk and enough space for two chairs. It's not quite the same cozy experience.

We were reading an eBook on the computer recently and my daughter complained that it was just like watching TV. She tends to like the eBooks that are CDs that she can put in her little Boombox. She will listen and re-listen to those stories for hours. I like that. She gets the benefit of reading by learning words and language, but she also has to use her imagination to visualize the characters and events.

I think if you have children who read independently, eBooks and POD titles could be popular. Especially when you are traveling!

What can people do to help The Reading Tub and literacy in general?

Please read with a child. Just 20 minutes of reading each day can make a HUGE difference in a child's reading achievement. There is a website called Ladders to Learning, and they had this to say about why we need to read with our kids: The group of children who were read to on a daily basis were 1.6 times as likely to be rated by their teachers as being near the top of their kindergarten class in learning skills, and 2.3 times as likely to be near the top of their class in communication skills. These relationships hold true regardless of the income of the child’s household and the education of the child’s mother.

If you don't have children, visit your local library and see if you can volunteer to read during story time. Or call your local family services center to see if there are programs you can volunteer with. If you're worried about "how" they teach reading these days, don't be. The important thing is that a child has an adult who supports them and says "I believe in you" just by helping. Last year we commissioned a set of articles about Guided Reading by Cathy Puett Miller, the Literacy Ambassador. The articles offer steps about ways to read with a child. Here's the link: http://www.thereadingtub.com/pdfs/our_guided_reading_set.pdf.

We would love to have some more book reviewers. We have a list of more than 200 titles on our "wish list." Some of these are books that people have asked us to read, but we haven't been able to get to them because we have so many sitting on our shelves already. All it takes is a trip to the library to read one of these books.

When you visit our Website, please take the time to register. We don't ask for a lot of information, and we don't send out a lot of eMail. We just want to know about the books you are reading with kids (grandkids, kids in playgroup, kids at school). Tell us your zip code and we can add your local library to our list. We don't have any registered readers in Nebraska or North Dakota, so if you know someone … spread the word. I would love to have a link to at least one library in every state by the end of the year!

Some people believe there’s simply too much sex and violence in young adult novels these days, while others believe books should reflect our present culture and society. What’s your opinion?

I don't know that I would limit the "too much" label to just young adult novels. I have been very surprised at the content marketed to younger children in picture books and early reader chapter books.

That said, we don't tend to get many books that cause us to raise an eyebrow. It may be that our target audience is younger; or it could be that authors/publishers for YA material don't see us as fitting their review demographic.

I would like to add, though, that we have received some incredible books for young adults that our teen reviewers have loved. The teens see stories with lots of action and characters they can relate to; the parents see books with wholesome stories and life lessons.

Keeping an eye on what our kids read is part of being a parent. I would put it in the same box as knowing about what movies they watch, what video games they play, or who their friends are. I think there is more to our culture and society than sex and violence. Yes, there is plenty of it and it is marketed to our kids as "cool." We can only shield our kids so much. At some point, we have to have faith that they will make the right choices. As parents, we get the "pleasure" of making the hard call when we have to.

Is there anything else you would like to say about you or your organization?

The Reading Tub® is the result of my own love of reading. I am very lucky to be able to build this resource and share my enthusiasm with others. If we can inspire just one person to read with a child, then we will have helped the world!

Thank you for this opportunity to share my passion.

Why Do the West and the East Think Differently?

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

One of the challenges to maintaining a happy and productive workplace can be cultural misunderstandings - and given the highly cosmopolitan societies in which many of us now live, the opportunities for cultural misunderstandings in the workplace are surely higher than ever. So how is it that different cultures have come to approach life so differently in the first place?

Richard E. Nisbett explores this theme in his book The Geography of Thought: How Asians and Westerners Think Differently...and Why. Nisbett traces the intellectual roots of the East and the West back to ancient China and Greece respectively, and shows how the differences between their ancient societies are still reflected in the world today. For example, the Greeks esteemed individual liberty as the ultimate ideal, whilst the Chinese valued family and harmony; the Greeks prized logic and the cut and thrust of debate, whilst the Chinese strived to find the middle road between opposing views.

So why was this?

Nisbett proposes that the societal differences between East and West can be traced back to the natural environments of China and Greece. For example, the fertile plains of China favoured agriculture, and agricultural societies need to work together well in teams. But the mountains and coastline of Greece favoured fishing, hunting, animal-rearing and trade - all reasonably individualistic occupations that required relatively little interaction with others.

The implication of this was that the Greeks came to see themselves as independent free-agents, who thought about the world in terms of individual objects, and who developed logic as a tool for settling social conflict so that the best view always prevailed. The Chinese, on the other hand, came to see themselves as interdependent parts of a greater whole, who thought about the world in terms of a series of complex interrelationships, and who favoured compromise for dealing with conflict.

Thus the Greeks invented rhetoric, and by extension science (though paradoxically, the ancient Chinese were far more technologically advanced), and the Chinese invented holistic healing.

So how does this affect the way that we think today?

Nisbett describes various laboratory tests that demonstrate how Easterners and Westerners respond differently to reasoning, attention and perception tests; Westerners generally tend to focus on objects, whereas Easterners like to consider the context as a whole.

In one test, American and Japanese subjects were asked to memorise the contents of an underwater fish scene. When asked to recall what they had just seen, the Japanese subjects made many more references to background elements such as rocks and seaweed, and on the relationships in the scene that involved background elements. They also tended to begin by describing the overall scene ("It looked like a pond"), whereas the Americans tended to focus on the main objects, such as the largest fish.

These different ways of viewing the world are also reflected in Eastern and Western languages. Western infants - born into a culture that tends to focus on individual objects - generally learn nouns much more rapidly than verbs, yet for Eastern infants - born into a culture that tends to emphasise the relationships between many objects - the reverse is true. This is because nouns are used to label individual objects, but verbs are used to describe the relationships between elements as they interact.

In fact, the Japanese have many different words for "I", depending on the context of who you're talking to; this is because the focus is not on the individual "me", but on the relationships between "me when I talk to my colleague" or "me when I talk to my spouse".

So what can we learn from all of this?

Yes, we are all different based on the culture into which we've been born. It's important to understand that where a Westerner may value freedom or the ability to make up their own mind, an Easterner may value ties with family and friends or living peaceably. Depending on our backgrounds, we all have different approaches to leadership, teamwork and problem solving; but being aware of these differences is an important step towards developing a mutual understanding and creating a positive workplace environment where everyone feels at ease.

Check out a video of Richard E. Nisbett discussing cultural differences at an instinctive level at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIkGwJrhMqM.

Computer Animation

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Computer helps for giving artificial life to images/graphics. In advance method of animation making, computer software has a great role. Computer only can help for making 2-D and 3-D animations easily. Animation is a graphic art that is unstable, uniquely run one after another within a frame area to create an illusion of movie. Software have that feature to shape the graphics one after another in a certain frame area. After compiling the frames, it generates a compact file that shows all the frames running the images sequentially.

Computer and Animator

Computer helps the animator for designing graphics, frame settings, color compositions, compilation of files. The computer technology brings the update methods through software that helps the animator putting his enormous ideas.

Virtual Animating Synthetic Motion

Popular animation movies have many types of characters and objects. For making them, the animators should know some basic knowledge on Kenematics, Articulated figure, effectors, Geometric (key frame techniques), Physical dynamics, Behavioral in individual and as a group and Motion Control Methods (MCM) etc. In 2-D and 3-D animation work some specific functions should be used. Kinematics is the study of the time related properties of motion such as position, acceleration, velocity and independent of the underlying forces that produce the motion. Articulated figure is a structure that consists of a series of rigid links connected at joints, frequently only revolute or rotary joints in computer animation. End effector is the free end of a chain of links, for example, a hand at the end of an arm in human character.

Motion twin, time line effect, morphing, masking, blurring, expanding, transitions, transform and explode are such activities used for object motion. Frame by frame motion in certain software is the best media for character motions. You can make some action buttons, movie clips for an interactive animation.

For character (i.e. human) animation the type of information of primary importance in animating an object, especially an articulated figure is very important. For a key frame system this is the angle of each of the joints. In a forward kinematics system the motion of all the joints in character is explicitly set by the animator. The animator would move the shoulder, arm, elbow, fore arm, hand, eye and lips. In inverse kinematics the animator moves the end effector and the system computes move the corresponding positions.

Animation software Tools

Software is a fantastic tool for creating the animated films, web site animations, animated comics, interface and emotional faces. Some exclusive Computer Animation creator software are eFrontier MotionArtist, efrontier Anime Studio, Anime Studio Pro, Morpheus Photo Animation Suite, Animations Plus, Cosmic Blobs, Macromedia Fireworks, Morpheus Photo Morpher, Poser 6/Shade LE Bundle, 3D Figure Design and Animation, Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Flash Pro, Fireworks, Istopmotion (Macintosh), Comic Life Deluxe, Poser Figure Artist, Animations & More, Cosmic Blobs - Expansion Pack Collection, Adobe LiveMotion, PodMedia Creator, Fisher Price Magna Doodle, 3D Album Picture Pro, Macromedia Flash Pro , CoreFX Three Level Complete Drawing, Eovia Carrara 4 Pro Win/Mac , Poser Figure Artist , Headline Studio 1.0 , iAnimator, Wild Photo Effects (Jewel Case) , WebRazor Pro 2.0 , Corefx Three Level , ProVenture Creative Animator , Net Ad Creator and many more.

AniBoom has a great role on computer animation in electronic media. AniBoom informs the application and more about computer animations in television and film industry.

Caleb Gattegno (1911 - 1988)

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Caleb Gattegno. He was an educator, particularly in mathematics, but also in linguistics, publishing many seminal works on the theory of education. But none of this theory was detached from the real world. His ideas were based on practical, real-life situations, and what, according to his observations, helped his students the most. He was also an inventor, creating tools for the classroom that are still used and found invaluable by today's teachers.

Gattegno grew up in Alexandria, then lived in Cairo, London and New York. He worked all over the world and devoted his life to a study of learning, not only creating a number of important innovative techniques for the teaching of languages and of mathematics, but also made a remarkable, seminal contribution to the understanding of the learning process at all ages. In 1952 he founded the organisation that would later become the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, and its magazine Maths Teaching. This year, the ATM is making Gattegno and his work the theme of their annual conference.

Caleb Gattegno made a significant impact on teaching and thinking about education not only in the UK but also in many countries around the world. Within mathematics, apart from the creation of ATM, his work included the promotion and use of Cuisenaire Rods, the creation of geoboards, developments of the animated geometry films of Nicolet, and the Gattegno 'tens' chart for number. Cuisenaire Rods were so effective, he thought, that he founded the Cuisenaire company in the UK.

In linguistics, Gattegno pioneered the learning of reading and foreign languages with 'infused reading' and 'the silent way'. He was the first English translator of Piaget, he was influential in spreading awareness of developmental psychology.

In addition he challenged many in the educational world to consider what is involved in learning, encouraging them to allow an explorative approach. The teacher's actions should be subordinated to the way in which the child learns through exploration and investigation. His idea that only awareness is educable breaks the learning process down into four stages. The first, the most important, is a single act of awareness, for example that something is there to be learned or can be explored. Without this realisation, or any notion that there is a challenge, problem or issue to be explored, the pupil will not be able to proceed to the next three stages. These stages can be described as exploration, transition (which begins with the new skill being something that can be achieved with a lot of concentration, and ends with it being automatic) and transfer, in which the new skill can be used and applied to the learning of yet other skills and ideas.

Use of his teaching aids was developed in classrooms, and to demonstrate their power he was prepared to teach children of any age or ability, at any time, in front of other teachers. He ran many seminars through his lifetime and his personal influence was felt profoundly by those who saw him in action.

Digital LED Billboards - The Next Wave in Visual Advertising

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Digital LED billboards truly are the next wave in visual advertising. Having been around for several years as a functional animated outdoor media format, such a medium has already proven to be a great and effective tool that attracts customers for businesses of any size.

One of the innovations that such a medium presents is that compared to its still counterparts, this billboard goes a step further by having the capability to display animation as well as specialized video-format commercials outdoors. In addition, rather than sending out a whole crew just to change the visuals displayed on these billboards, operators can simply click a mouse button to do all the work, without having to risk the safety of people to do what could be hazardous task.

Already a popular marketing tool in high-profile areas like New York and Las Vegas, their effectiveness and innovation truly show that LED billboards are indeed the next wave in visual advertising. Companies and businesses of any size that would like to bring their success levels up a notch can definitely take advantage of this exciting form of advertising technology.

They are beginning to catch the interest of other European countries as well. Advertising experts have noted that using LED billboards opens up a powerful way for advertisers to reach a potential critical mass with its targeted audiences. In addition to videos, digital LED billboards also allow advertisers to use other types of non-traditional content such as flash animations from companies' websites, which creates a big impact to the target audience while increasing asset efficiency as well.

Start Your Own Mobile Pet Grooming Business

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Starting a mobile pet grooming business requires knowledge about grooming pets and operating a business. It would be unwise to spring into this idea without a plan of action. It would end up exploding in your face somewhere along the way.

There are online classes on dog grooming that offer techniques on grooming a pet, as well as, business start up information. Both of these skills are need to be successful. If you were to rely solely on your current knowledge of bathing a dog, you will soon meet frustration. The dogs you will encounter each day can be unpredictable and quite nervous. You will need to know how to handle the dogs without anyone getting injured.

Running your own business is not a piece of cake. You should start off knowing what the zoning and permit legalities are. If you are a mobile pet groomer, you will need to own a mobile grooming unit and all of the equipment and tools associated with dog grooming. There are a multitude of supplies that should be recorded on your inventory list. Do you know what paperwork to have on-hand with this type of business? That is another important step to learn. The customers that you get want a professional to do business with.

There is a lot of capital invested into advertising at the start of your mobile pet grooming business. Think about the ways you will get the word out about your new business. It helps to visit other dog grooming businesses in the area. Get an idea of what to charge and what type of services to offer. Starting out charging low would be a smart idea.

All in all, the mobile pet grooming business offers convenience to people who want their pets groomed. They will be relieved to know that this type of service comes to them. There is no need to make a trip to a grooming salon. It will give them more free time and keep them from doing the actual dirty work. Pet owners usually spoil their animals and want the best for them. When they notice that there is a mobile pet grooming business in the area, the chances of them giving you a call would probably be high.

Responsible Dog Ownership - What to Expect when Getting a New Puppy or Dog

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

I've had responsibility on the mind lately. I am a frequent visitor to several classified ad sections dealing with dogs and dog services for sale. There is a trend in dog ownership that I see as inexcusable.

As a professional dog trainer I know that dogs are not the easiest animals to own. When talking about ease of ownership there is typically no comparing the work involved with caring for a dog or puppy as there is with taking on a cat, fish, or turtle. As I view these classifieds from time to time I am upset to see such phrases as "Have to get rid of the dog because she sheds so much" or "This dog needs an owner who can give him more attention" or "Needs an owner who can give him a daily walk" or "Needs an owner who can give her training".

The question that should be posed to these owners is, "What were you thinking?" Were you thinking when you got a dog that it would be simple? Weren't you realizing that a dog is going to shed, is going to bark, is going to need training, is going to need exercise?

This article is for the potential dog owner in hopes that I can help you understand what it is you are getting in to:

1- Dogs shed. They get dirty. They can smell bad. Can you deal with that? They will need baths, and special tools to manage shedding. Dogs need special shampoos.

2- Dogs cost money. Vaccinations are necessary for every single puppy. Worming medication is needed for every puppy. There are also many other medical costs such as blood and stool tests, potential x-rays, and many other costs that arise from normal dog ownership. Keep in mind, I'm talking about healthy animals. If your dog has sicknesses or health defects your tab could easily run into the thousands. You must figure health care costs into your budget before getting any dog.

3- Every single dog requires training. You have to remember that a dog is an animal. Nearly every one of his instincts is contrary to what you want in a dog. Dogs jump, chew, dig, go to the bathroom in the house, etc. It is your responsibility to teach your dog what is acceptable. It will probably be months at a minimum before you can allow your dog freedom in the house while you aren't home. If you want to take your dog to the park off leash it will probably require months of training and hundreds or thousands of dollars in professional trainer costs. If you want the perfect dog it will likely take hours and hours of work over the space of many months, lots of money, and a boat-load of patience.

Dogs aren't accessories to be acquired on a whim and discarded when it isn't convenient. Responsible dog ownership requires real work, real effort, and real money. If you aren't in it for the long haul, don't get the dog in the first place.

Good luck in your quest to owning the right dog.

How Can You Immediately Increase Your Search Engine Traffic?

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Increasing web traffic towards any site depends on many factors. The value of the content available and the relevance in the current scenario is more important for visitors. The algorithm used by the search engine robots has many parameters that determine the page rank for any given site. Tweaking the features of the given page to match the requirements of the engines is the secret behind improving page rank.

Any page that is back linked through a large number of sources is bound to attract a large viewer attention. These can be developed through the use of blogs, newsletters, community chat sites etc. The search engines see this large number of links as a sign of huge popularity of the site. This is the reason why Facebook, Twitter, Gtalk and Yahoo News appear consistently at the head of the search results. However, there is a catch to this unique method. Unscrupulous webmasters use this technique to manipulate the engines to rank their sites having poor content, higher than more relevant sites. Hence, search engines employ methods like 'semantic search' to detect the presence of deliberate misuse of keywords, phrases and links. Hence, the challenge lies in using the optimum number of links to obtain the best of the concentration of such back links.

Using the social media tools where a lot of potential clients converge for discussing a wide range of topics can also be used to generate back links and leads. Initiating a topic of relevance to the concerned website and getting the maximum number of people to contribute to the chat is vital. Putting valuable inputs at regular intervals to direct the flow of discussion, and maintaining the relevance it carries with the website, is important.

Search engines are typically fond of sites that are easy to access, navigate, crawl through for information and have interesting content. Hence, using this feature to modify the site structure to make the availability of information easier is of vital importance. The search engines easily index sites that have well developed sitemaps. The sitemaps contain URLs to every page that is included within the site. This makes it easier for engines to seek relevant content that may be located in deeper pages with ease. Generating such sitemaps and submitting them into the root directory helps to present a current structure of the site to the search engines.

The appropriate use of title tags, Meta tags and heading tags help to improve page rankings. The use of accurate keywords in the tags also helps to optimize the content with that of the requirements of the search engines. Minimum use of graphics, animation, and images on the page results in quick loading and easy capture of keywords that may be present on the page. Search engines are on the look out for accurate information. Hence, quick loading pages are preferred over slow loading ones. The modification of images to reduce the number of HTTP requests help to cut down on display time. Use of sprite images make it easier for pages to load, despite the delay in complete appearance of images.

SEO optimization is an ongoing process that involves a number of steps to reach the optimum level. However, the marked difference observed between the sites that are modified and those that are unmodified, is convincing enough for webmasters to adopt such unique methods to achieve better rankings for the sites.

Wood And Soapstone - The Pillars of African Handicraft

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Wood carvings and soapstone sculptures are the two main pillars of African handicraft. They represent a unique art and reflect the culture of the native country. While the products can take many forms, the main ones are animal and human statures. Hundreds of years of practice, transmitted down from generation to generation has produced talented artisans whose products easily qualify as home decors and stunning gifts to loved ones. You can equally use them to bring back sweet memories of a trip to Africa. In this article, I will discuss wood carvings and soapstone sculptures in more detail...

Hard Wood Carvings: Within East Africa, this type of handicraft are the most common forms of sculptures available. They generally represent human or animal forms. The main reason why the majority of carvings come from this material is because wood is so easily available. The artists that carry out this craft can, therefore, do so on a regular basis, and thanks to this, the items that they produce are now readily available to people all over the world. On top of this, wood is also very easy to work with, meaning the artists that carve using it only need to be equipped with basic rather than advanced tools.

There are two types of wood that can be used for carving, soft and hard. Hard wood is more brittle and therefore cracks more easily than soft wood but it is much stronger. The resultant carvings are not only of high quality, but are durable because they stand damage by insects and weather much longer. Thanks to the quality of the wood that these handicrafts are made from, you are safe in the knowledge that whatever item you purchase will be made and finished to the highest of standards.

Soapstone Sculptures: Kenyan soapstone sculptures are mostly crafted in Kisii area. This is because soapstone in Kenya,is only found in Kisii area. This substance gains its name from the soapy feel that is associated with talc; it is a soft substance that is easily carvable, making it possible to craft beautiful items. The items sculpted from this material can take any form, shape or size but commonly represent animals, tribal themes and humans.

All African handicraft products, regardless of the materials they are crafted from, are made by very talented, hardworking ordinary citizens and the skills that they possess are handed down from generation to generation. The finished products are stunning in their design and craftsmanship, but don't just take my word for it, see for yourself and I'm sure you'll agree.

Making Sure Your Cows Have Good Feet to Put Forward

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

There are two good reasons to look at your cattle herd's feet regularly. First, problems with hooves may cause your cattle unnecessary pain. Secondly, whether you are raising dairy, beef or bucking stock, foot trouble costs you money in decreased production and performance. These are the practices we employ here at our bucking stock operation.

Here are some basics to be mindful of. Cattle that spend most of their time on rough natural ground need less care typically. Cattle that are standing on concrete, or other artificial surfaces need more care to their feet. Cattle need to be able to lay down for about four or five hours a day to rest their legs and feet. If they are not allowed this rest time, they will have more problems. Watch how far your herd needs to travel, what they are walking on, and make sure they have enough suitable space for this laying down time.

Based upon the particular character of your operation, you should establish a regular schedule for hoof maintenance and care. This would typically be about twice a year for the average dairy program. This should include checking the first calf heifers about 60 days before they come due to make sure they will be well set for carrying the extra weight of the last phase of pregnancy and their coming full udders.

Most lameness in cattle is due to hoof injury or disease versus leg injury. The exception here is with bucking stock, where injury to legs is much more common. These are usually incurred in the course of competition and are observed though. Handlers should become familiar with locomotion scoring and use this tool regularly to scan herds for foot problems. We do this daily in the course of our pasture work at our ranch.

The cattle should be tended by a trained hoof trimmer unless you have gotten this training yourself. These can be difficult to track down outside dairy belts but it is worth the time to make sure that the work is done correctly. A confinement cage appropriate for the purpose is absolutely needed to do the job safely. Most trimmers prefer chutes that tilt and lay the animal over horizontally once secure. Professional trimmers have these and travel with them to job site.

The cost of an unprofessional job or lack of attention here can mean the needless sacrifice of an animal, or pain that could have been prevented. It is our responsibility to make sure that our animals are well cared for from nose to toes while they are in our herds. These tips should help.

A Discussion of Hedge Trimmer Garden Care

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Hedge trimmer garden care is important to most any homeowner, gardener, and landscaping business. The trimmers aid people in maintaining neat, decorative, and well taken care of bushes and shrubs on properties. Besides being decorative, well-maintained shrubs and bushes have the ability to create defined areas within a garden or landscape. With this said, the hedge trimmers' important role in the upkeep of a nice looking garden can not be stressed enough.

While the mentioned trimmers are a very common gardening tool, there are many different types of them to choose from today. They can run anywhere from under one hundred dollars to over three hundred dollars. Furthermore, there are many divergent features available. Given this dynamic, a consumer needs to think about the level of use that he or she will be giving to the trimmers and what the specific needs of his or her garden are. For example, a radically different type of trimmer set would be purchased to maintain a small garden than one that would be bought to take care of a farm.

Manual trimmers are available, as are trimmers that are powered by electricity or gas. Manual trimmers are best for small gardens, and they are also extremely useful with providing detail to bushes and shrubs. Electronic trimmers are cheaper than gas-powered ones, and they also tend to be more silent. Some electronic ones are available with cords, though these models are only practical for small gardens since the cords usually do not extend beyond one hundred feet. When the decision is made to use a gas or battery powered trimmer set, the person using the trimmers should make sure that he or she has an extra battery on hand or that the trimmers are fully loaded in the case of a gas model. Gas-powered trimmers are almost always the choice used by professional landscaping companies.

Some hedge trimmers of extended lengths are available. However, this feature is only of use if the gardener would like to reach higher hedges. Furthermore, some trimmers come with additional security features. For instance, some trimmer sets have the ability to make blades shut down completely for a few seconds after the handle is released. Other brands have a protective shield in front of the blades.

The uses of the trimmers are many, and they include maintaining bushes and hedges; harvesting fruits; and cutting grass. Each of these areas will be discussed in detail below.

To begin, the hedge trimmers can be used to maintain bushes and hedges. This includes shaping, trimming, and thinning them. Overall, manual trimmers are best for small jobs and also tend to offer the most precision and detail. It should also be noted that trimmers can be used to transform ordinary bushes and hedges into eccentric animal, number, and/or letter shapes. This is often done by professional landscaping companies for decorative purposes, and a combination of electronic and manual trimmers is used to this end.

Hedge trimmers are also used to harvest fruits. They can be used to cut fruit off of trees, which in turn makes fruit picking easier. This process also leaves unpicked fruit intact, and it prevents it from falling down. This is significant as lots of fruit falling down from trees can equate to lost revenue for a farmer.

Last but not least, hedge trimmers can be used to cut grass. In this instance, electronic or gas-powered trimmers are typically attached to tractors to cut grass from large properties including farms.

In conclusion, hedge trimmer garden care is important to anyone who owns a home and would like to have a well- maintained garden. There are manual, electronic, and gas-powered trimmers available, and they vary in cost as well as features. Some of the many uses of the trimmers include maintaining bushes and shrubs; harvesting fruit; and cutting grass.

Make Your Character Come to Life With Character Animation

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Creating your own cartoon character is a fun and exciting activity. Do you remember the time when you were a kid, when you just loved to draw cartoon characters along with the squiggles? There is no rule that you have to stop this hobby if you are still into it as you grow into an adult. If you want to engage in character animation, there are a few factors to consider. First, think of the word character. What do you want your cartoon to be all about? Imagining what your hero or heroine's character will be can help you get an initial idea and determine how your cartoon will look like. Start with the basic geometric shapes. Circles, squares and triangles are a good way to start your drawing. Then put in the details as you go along. Remember to include in your study drawings the different facial expressions of your character, like what it will look like when angry, happy or sad. Draw about five to seven initial drafts of your characters before going on to the next step.

Once you're done with your cartoon and you are satisfied with the initial sketches, then the next step is to write the script, which is the challenging part. It is important to have a script if your character animation will involve several cartoon characters and voice actors. The longer your animation feature is, the better your script will develop. It will help you in creating a solid storyboard, which is a small series of pictures and drawings of your complete animation. It will contain the highlights and important scenes of your plot. Your scenes do not have to be detailed, the basic sketches and rough drawings will do because the storyboard will just serve as your guide. You can even draw stick figures and simple geometric shapes for the background. With this, you don't have to necessarily record your audios in order.

There are several free or paid recording software available both for the Mac and PC platform. But since this is your first character animation, just go for the free or trial ones. You will also need a good quality microphone. A mic that can filter out background noise is a good choice but can be costly. Time your voice according to your animation. Or time your animation according to your voice. But it should be stressed that you should time everything. Otherwise, your animation will look like a dubbed foreign cartoon where the lips don' match the words!

Study animation various software and stick to the one that you feel most comfortable working on before looking for more advanced software. Of course you also have to consider the effects you are going to us like the background noise, music and the sound effects. Again, because you have a storyboard, you don't have to do the animation in sequence. You can go through the scenes and just arrange them when you're done. As easy as that, you can distribute copies of your animation feature. Remember to ask for feedback so that you can improve on your next project. Who knows, maybe one day you will be able to join the rank of the elite in the field of being a character animator?

How to Increase Laptop Speed - A Tweak That You Should Do If Your Laptops Are Running Slow

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

A question that many laptop owners will eventually ask when their laptops are starting to annoy them. The thing is, to increase laptop speed is the same as you do a computer, provided that they have the same operating system, which in this case is Windows. But being a little less powerful than a computer, a laptop can slow down in almost all application if not maintained properly. In this article, I will show you an easy visual tweak as one of the ways on how to increase laptop speed.

The newer version of Windows provides an additional visual feature that is stunning to look at. With the entire dropdown menu animation, it is quite impressive. But with a laptop, this extra features, though barely noticeable, can become a hassle and will slow down you laptop.

This feature will used up your laptop's resources and will make the system take longer to load, which nobody wants. You need to remove this feature and then optimize your laptop's resources on the performance and not the visual feature.

This is one of the ways on how to increase laptop speed, to do this; you can access the Performance Options and tweak the options there to suit your laptop. To access the Performance Option, click start, then go to Control Panels, and then look for the System icon, and click it. Alternatively, you could just right click the My Computer and select properties.

At the system properties, select the advanced tab and then click settings in the performance area. If you do it correctly, the Performance Dialog window will appear.

There, you can tweak the option that suit your laptop, and reduce any visual luxury that has been making your laptop running slow.

Or if your laptop is really in a bad shape, you could choose the Adjust for best performance options. This can really make your Windows unpretty, but you will have the speed that you wanted.

How to get a Florida Hardship License

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

If you have a suspended license in the state of Florida, follow the steps below to obtain a hardship license so you can drive legally while getting your license back.

  1. Sign up for the online 12 hour traffic school (ADI) class. One you've paid, you will receive a letter of enrollment.
  2. Go to the Clerk of Court and get a "30 day search" of your driving record. This takes just a few minutes and they will give you a letter that provides information about your driving record.
  3. After you've received the Letter of Enrollment from our Traffic School and a letter from the Clerk, you can go to the DMV and apply for a hardship license with a Hearing Officer. Later, you'll still need to complete our 12 hour course. If you are a "habitual offender" as indicated in the DMV Letter of Enrollment, you must complete the course before you can apply for the hardship license.

Ways to Take the Course

Generally, traffic school classes include lectures by law officials, safety movies and discussions about specific violations in a traditional classroom setting for 12 hours. Thanks to the Internet, you can now take the suspended license course online right from the comfort of your own home. The classes are taught with interactive web applications that include graphics and animations. The online ADI course is simple to use with no computer experience needed and you can get the certificate you need to get your full license back via email.

The Rules

The steps above are for drivers that have had their license suspended in the state of Florida for points, as a habitual traffic offender (non-DUI related), or by court order. Some violations are not eligible for a hardship license:

Suspended license for being incapable of operating a motor vehicle safely

Suspension is for one year. You are not eligible for a hardship license.

Conviction for Driving Under the Influence (DUI)

Suspension is for 180 days to 1 year. DUI School completion and treatment, if referred, is required. You then can apply for a hardship license in any Administrative Reviews Office where you live.

How To Transfer Programs From Old Computer To New Computer

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

If you are looking at just transferring files from XP to Vista or from your old computer to your new computer you have many different options. One of which is the free easy data transfer tool built into Windows XP and Vista. This easy data transfer tool is not hard to use and does transfer over files and user settings. You can always just manually do the data transfer as well but if you go that route you will not be able to transfer over the user settings from your old system to the new. The overall cost to use the easy data transfer wizard depends on what method you use to transfer over the files. If your using a network then you have no additional costs. If you use a CD or an external media device then you have the cost of the CD's or the USB hard drive.

But How do I transfer over programs to my new Computer

The Windows easy transfer wizard will not transfer over programs. If you want to transfer over your old data you will need to purchase software to do this. This type of software is not all too expensive. Most people can purchase this for a round 59 bucks. You may also want to get an easy transfer cable as well if you do not have a network or USB hard drive to back the data onto. With the easy data transfer cable you can just sync the two computers together using the data transfer software and in a few clicks the transfer will start. The time it takes will vary widely on how much data you have. It may take 20 minutes or even 3 hours if you have a ton of music and pictures. To sum it up here there is no free way to transfer programs from one computer to another.

There are some important things to consider when transferring over programs. For instance if you have XP and are moving to Vista then you will want to make sure the programs you are moving will work with Vista. Most printers need to updated software to work with Vista. Office programs will work just fine and most anti-irus program will as well. You should always check first. If you do not check you can always just uninstall the program if it does not work.

The History Of Hypnosis & The Trance State

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

It seems that Hypnosis goes as far back as we are capable of looking. In fact it stands to reason that if the first written records of the human race include references to some form of hypnosis then it existed prior to written records also. There have been many different techniques and methods for using hypnosis over the thousands of years of our human history. It has been used to relax, motivate, inspire and even heal. So it is not surprising that hypnosis has become one of the most powerful tools for self improvement that is available in the 21st Century!

A skilful hypnotist can induce a state of such deep relaxation that he can focus a subject's attention in such a way that he can produce various changes in the chemistry and function of the human body. These changes are not limited to but can include the regulation of blood flow and bllod pressure, physical symtoms such as burn marks on the skin, clearning skin conditions such as belemishes and birth marks and even implant false memories, new urges and thoughts.

The modern form of hypnosis that we know of today is actually a derivative of mesmerism named after its creator Anton Mesmer. In the latter part of the 18th Century Mesmer claimed he could manipulate the energy system of anyone to induce a deep state of trance. He called these energies 'animal magnetism' and said that by manipulating them you could achieve astounding results and physical phenomenon. It is reported that practitioners of mesmerism could merely look or point at a subject in order to make them go into an involuntarily deep trance immediately!

Due to its popularity in stage theatres and its apparent successes in healing Mesmerism was subject to a great amount of public scrutiny. Although there is evidence to suggest that it was successfully used to cure almost every disorder and illness known at the time very little else is known about the actual techniques. Due to intense public curiosity and governmental scrutiny an investigation was launched by the French Government, under Louise XVI, in 1784 to investigate Mesmer and his claims. This French commission, which had the American Benjamin Franklin as one of its members, concluded that there was no such thing as animal megnetism and it was therefore impossible to manipulate which meant that mesmerism was a fraud. However, they did not dispute the healings and concluded that the obvious therapeutic benefits of the techniques were due in some manner to the imagination and mental processes of the subjects. It was concluded that the affects that were witnessed were due entirely to the suggestions and the power of the subject's own mind.

Mesmerism and the techniques employed by its practitioners are now almost completely lost and one can only hope that some secret organisation somewhere still has access to them but to us they are gone and relugated to the annals of history. However, mesmerism has left its legacy in the form of modern hypnosis. Due to the French Government's findings scientists who were interested in the therapeutic and mind altering capabilities of mesmerism decided to continue their research into it but felt they needed to create a new name for the phenomenon to avoid the negative connotations with the fraud allegations.

Hypnos, in Greek mythology, represented sleep. Hypnos (sleep) and his twin Thanatos (death) were born of the goddess Nyx (night). Hypnos lived in a palace which was in a dark cave where the sun could never shine. At the entrance to his cave was a selection of hypnogogic plants that caused hallucinations and mind altering visions. Part of the Greek myth satated that through dreams Hypnos would visit and give offerings. Thus scientists had found a perfect representation of the phenomenon that they were studying and thus the term "hypnosis" was born

Probably the one person who brought hypnosis to that attention of the public the most was Sigmund Freud. He used hypnosis in the very early 20th Century to gain access to the unconscious parts of his patient's minds and delve deeper into the hidden aspects of their character, personalities and personal history. Although Freud stated in his later years that hypnosis was far too powerful a technique to be used safely it is now believed that his approach to the subject was amateurish. Modern techniques are now completely safe, tested and reliable. Freud actually complained that although one of his patients had healed herself through hypnosis he did not have enough control over her! It appears that Freud did not like the fact that subjects still have full control over themselves while in a hypnotic state and wanted to get all the credit for the healing.

The modern success and availability of hypnosis can be traced back to one man who was a pioneer in the field, Milton Erikson. The realitively new field of Neuro Linguistic Programming, better known as NLP, owes its development to Erikson. He developed the use of post hypnotic suggestions and clearly demonstarted just how effective they can be when used in trance. He is also responsible for demonstrating the power of using visual images while in trance.

His work showed that using hypnosis with his techniques of verbal statements and visualizations could produce profound results in healing and dramatic changes in mental processes. It was also Erickson who first promoted the use of indirect suggestion. This lead him to suggest to a subject that they might not be fully "aware that you feeling sleepy" or that their "eyes are getting heavy". This indirect use of suggestions was also developed in a very powerful post hypnotic technique for altering behaviours whereby he accessed the subconscious mind and mental processes of the subject without the subject being aware of it. Through parables and other techniques Erikson found he could effectively access and reprogram the subconscious mind without any interference from the conscious mind.

Erickson was definitely the father of modern hypnosis for he also developed a very wide variety of verbal and visual techniques that changed how the medical establishment viewed the role of the mind in healing and also strongly affected the fields of psychotherapy and how advertising was used in marketing. His techniques were based on his understanding of how the human mind processes verbal and visual input. He created interplays between words and discovered that if he used strategically placed pauses and tonalities, redirection and also misdirection or even words with double or multiple meanings he could cause confusion in the conscious mind and access the subconscious more quickly - which he found could also fully understand and implement what he wanted it to!

As you can see Hypnosis in its modern form has went through many changes and has been refined into a very powerful and beneficial tool for healing and self-change. I hope this short introduction to the subject has sparked your interest and maybe even your curiosity to give it a try!

Answering Your Candles Questions

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

The world would still be in the dark if it were not for the candle. Mankind evolved from a burning branch into a wax candle to light the way. But in the modern home most candles are either purely decorative or they are used to freshen the home from smelly odors.

There are entire lines of candles devoted expressly to scenting an area of your home. Many people have forgotten how important a candle can be until they need it.

Candles do not run on batteries and can light up a darkened room on a stormy night. Candles can set the mood for a romantic evening for two or can brighten up a birthday cake. Candles have proven very useful over the years but many people have simply no clue as to how they are made. This article will cover some of the basic questions you may have about candles, how they are made and how you can enjoy candles in your own home made by your very own hand.

What are candles made of?

A candle can be made of many different things. Early candles found in the ruins of the Egyptians and Chinese gave us candles that were made out of wax that came from ground up seeds and insects. Candles can be made from animal fat such as whale blubber, from cinnamon and from paraffin which is the most commonly used substance today. Early settlers in New England made candles from Bayberries and you can still find candles made from this today though they are a bit expensive since it takes so many to make one candle.

Can I make a candle at home?

Yes, candle making is very easy at home if you have the proper ingredients and tools necessary to do the job. There are even kits you can buy at retail stores and online that include everything you need to make your very own candle.

If you have the tools and just need the ingredients to make the candle you can check out EBay. EBay has many auctions for waxes, scents and even candle holders that you can bid on and win. Some auctions even feature a 'Buy it now' that allows you to skip the bidding part.

What types of scents can I put into my candle?

If there is a scent in the world, you can probably find the oil to put into your candle. That is meaning to say that the scent is entirely up to you. There is a wide range of essential oils to add to candles that can be added to create a scented candle.

You may like the smell of apples and cinnamon or lavender. It is entirely up to you to decide what scented candle you wish to make. You can even combine scents in different layers of the candle.

How much should I sell my candles for?

In order to determine how much the candles should sell for you need to figure out a few things. How much did the material cost you? How many candles were you able to make out of the material? Take the cost of the material and divide by the number of candles that were made.

The resulting number is how much it cost per candle. Now figure in the percentage of your time and effort plus how much profit you wish to make per candle. Just remember to not go too high or people will not buy your candles if they can find them cheaper somewhere else.

The Story of Ruth

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

While I was waiting in the front entrance of the nursing home for my elderly friend, the empty living room on my right attracted my attention for some reason. I had about five minutes or so before my friend would be ready and I moved toward the room to get a better look. As I entered I saw a small, frail woman sitting in a wheelchair in the corner of the room, hidden from view. It was "Her." It was the one that my friend talked about, the one who is 106 years old.

I had, in fact, heard of her before and knew that she had been a celebrated landscape photographer when she was a much younger woman. In her 80s she made portraits of children. I was excited to meet her. I wanted to know her name. I knelt down in front of her as she took my right hand in hers. I had been told that she does not talk anymore because she is "out of it". Many of the people living in this home were seemingly separated from the reality of the present moment. So I didn't question it.

She held my hand tightly as we stared into each other's eyes. Hers were blue as are mine. What else might we have in common? I was mesmerized by her eyes. They were ancient and red-rimmed. I imagined that I could see her soul shining through her eyes. I was certain she could see mine.

But it was her hands that held my soul in awe. The veins in her hands were prominent. Her fingers seemed to be literally skin and bones, yet the strength in her grip was real, very old and very real. As we continued to stare into each other's eyes, a strong curiosity about her life journeyed through my mind:

What had these hands done since they were the hands of an infant in 1904? Did that tiny hand clutch her mother's pinky finger as her mother sang a lullaby? Did she suck her fist or her thumb for comfort? Did she rub her eyes with her hands when she was tired? How old was she when she first reached out and away from herself in exploration? How old was she when she mastered feeding herself with her fingers? Was she right handed or left handed?

When she was a child did she use her hands to play with dolls or balls? Did she like to dig for worms? Or color? How did she hold her pencil and what did her early handwriting look like? When did she learn to write her name? What was her grown-up handwriting like? Did she like to write letters to far away friends and relatives?

Did she ever learn to play the piano? Did she like to lick her fingers when they were sticky with cake batter? Did she bite her nails or pick her nose? Did the back of her hand ever get slapped because she was naughty? Did the back of her hand ever get kissed by her father after he told her he loved her?

Did she feed and water the animals or sew quilts? Or both? Did these hands ever pick pole beans for supper or arrange flowers cut from the garden she lovingly tended all summer? Or did she collect wild flowers and butterflies and carefully pin them to a board with the genus and species printed below, by her own hand?

Did she work in the fields or in a factory or did she go to school holding book after book in her eager hands? She was only 14 during World War I. How did she use her hands when she was 14? Women in this country won the right to vote in August 1920. She was 16 in 1920. Did she hold signs in her hands that demanded a woman's right to vote? Had she ever voted? Where would she put her mark if she could vote today?

How old was she the first time she made love with an adoring partner and how did she caress that lover with her hands? Had she ever been married? Was she gentle with her children or was she impatient and harsh? Could she tell they had a fever by touching their bellies? Did she stroke their hair or rub their backs with a generous touch when they were upset? Or was she hesitant to touch them for some reason?

Did she work outside of her home with her hands as well as tend a family? Maybe she has never held a baby in her hands. Perhaps she preferred to stay celibate and unmarried; a "spinster" because she had ambitions beyond her time; because she loved photography too much to stay home. Was she content to live alone?

She was called to the beauty and the power of the ocean. What was the subject of her very first photograph? How did she use her hands to focus the lens on her camera to capture that image she saw as magnificent? Did she skillfully develop the film in the darkroom of her studio... with her own two hands?

Was she a great homemaker or did she have more important things to do with her hands? How many pies had she made with these hands? How many loaves of bread had she kneaded on the kitchen counter with care? Did she put up peaches and pickles and tomatoes for later?

Would she scrub her kitchen floor on her hands and knees or would it not ever occur to her to do such a thing? Did she ever have a cat sit on her lap so she could stroke soft fur with her weary hands on a cold wintry night? How did her hands get so strong?

She was in her late 30s during World War II. Was she in the war or did she stay home and crochet bandages for the wounded soldiers like her grandmother used to do? Maybe she worked in a factory and was a riveter mastering powerful tools with her hands.

How did she use her hands to sooth her worry or stress? Would she rub her forehead or twirl her thumbs? Did her hands ache with arthritis when the weather changed? How did she make the pain go away? How did she put on lotion?

I know that she liked to hold hands, because her grip on me stayed true. I continued to wonder:

Did she clap her hands when she was happy or surprised? Did she cover her mouth when she sneezed? Had she ever had her palm read by a psychic? Did anything from that reading come to pass? Would she shake her finger at her apprentices when they made a mistake? Did she ever point a finger at something she thought was special? Had she ever given anyone "the finger" in frustration or anger?

Did she still like to eat certain foods with her fingers, like when she was a baby just learning to grasp? I like to eat lettuce with my fingers. Did she ever like to do that too?

Did she ever wear rings... or nail polish?

How about lip stick or face powder; did she put these things on, using her hands to make herself feel pretty? How did she brush her hair?

Did she ever hold a cigarette? Or smoke a pipe by cradling it in the palm of her hand?

How did she hold her hands when she received a gift?

How did she hold her hands when she prayed?

As we continued to stare into each other's eyes I asked her name. She readily answered me saying, "Ruth. My name is Ruth." For some reason I was not surprised she could be so present with me. I said, "I know that you used to take beautiful photographs." She stared at me. "I did. I did do that." Ruth knew she had done that. It was a statement she just made, not a question in her mind. "I did that" she said clearly. Suddenly she raised the back of my right hand to her lips and kissed it deliberately closing her eyes for just a moment.

Then she seemed to fade back into the place in her mind she had been dwelling before our five minutes together. "Thank you Ruth," I said quietly knowing she may not be able to hear me. I will welcome the day I will look into another's eyes and proudly say "I did that." At that moment a nurse came and wheeled Ruth away to continue on with the day. Her life here in this place appeared to be so mundane. Mine will never be the same again.

5 Steps to Achieve Top Search Engine Rankings

,
ANIMATION TOOLS :

Ever since business owners have discovered the importance of websites in boosting their profits and maintain or gather new customers, they have spent a good amount of time in front of their PCs. They have been tweaking their webpages in order to conform with the SEO tricks that they are learning. On the other hand, they spend their advertising money more on pay per click campaigns than in conventional print ads in newspapers. They are also into e-mail spamming, newsletter writing, and almost every imaginable Internet advertising method. With the many techniques that you may have known by now, you will always run out of time when you're doing Internet marketing. What should you do then? You just need to focus on these 5 huge steps to achieve top search engines rankings:

1. Get your content right. It's already cliche, but the "content is king" approach still does wonders for search engines. This is because they prefer websites that aim to provide Internet users with quality information based on the niche that they belong to. Users, on the other hand, tend to increase your search engine rankings by adding your link at their own websites or sharing it to their friends and family members.

Nevertheless, there are some rules that you have to remember when it comes to content. Obviously, you're not allowed to copy them verbatim from any other website, or else, you'll be accused of plagiarism. The least thing that you can do is to at least make a rewrite. Moreover, though keywords are just as essential to attract search engine spiders, make sure that you don't overdo it to avoid getting any penalty.

2. Choose your keywords properly. Keywords are very essential to any website. They will be your bases for ranking. That's why it's very important that you choose your keywords properly. If not, you may be driving the wrong audience, those who are not interested in purchasing your products or availing of your services.

Fortunately, there are different kinds of keywords tools that you can utilize when you are searching for the right keywords. Overture and Google ad words are free for you to use. If you want something more comprehensive, you can always go for WordTracker. Judge the choice of keywords based on their popularity and the value they have to Internet users.

3. Link your pages. Links serve as guide for search engine spiders. If you want to make sure that their visit is really pleasant, then you need to link your different web pages to one another. The best option is to make use of text links, since they add relevancy to your web pages. Moreover, you can add these text links at the bottom portion of your homepage. Just focus on those pages that are very essential to your website and your visitors. Another technique is through the creation of site map. It will have all of the links to your web pages. As a matter of fact, it's advisable for websites to have site maps. The good thing about them is that you can schedule the visit of search engine spiders to your web page update. This way, they will always find new content to index in your website.

4. Focus on the structure of sites. There are a number of people that believe that too much glitter is actually gold. That is completely untrue when it comes to SEO. Animation and Flash are usually frowned upon for two reasons. First, they don't necessarily add value to your site in terms of SEO. Second, they can just slow down the speed during download, which, in turn, may compel Internet users to look for other websites.

What you need to concentrate on when it comes to site structures is to develop pages that are very convenient to navigate by Internet users and search engine spiders. A very good technique is to develop your pages the way that you're going to read a book. Hence, add keywords to your top-left portion.

5. Submit your website in directories. Why should you focus on submitting your site in directories and not search engines? It doesn't really mean that the latter is a bad move. However, as mentioned, search engine spiders will visit pages and just follow the links. If you are added in directories, you can still be found by these crawlers. Submitting in directories, not in search engines, will save you time.

There are hundreds of directories that you can find in the Internet, and though you may be tempted to submit your web pages to all of them to increase your chances, it could be best if you can seek those reputable ones. These are those that have PRs3 and up.

You will benefit from their excellent search engine ranking. Nevertheless, when you're using this technique, you must have patience as usually it may take months before you can get the result that you like. The nice thing about this is you will gain a permanent link.
